I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education.


 

Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 at Shadwell, Virginia and passed away on July 4, 1826 at his home in Monticello. He was best known for these impressive accomplishments:

  • Author of the Declaration of Independence

  • 3rd President of the United States

  • Facilitated the Louisiana Purchase

  • The founder of the University of Virginia

He also served in other capacities as a public servant including:

  • Member of the Continental Congress

  • Governor of Virginia

  • Secretary of State

  • United States Minister to France
